Viewing Notes

It’s hard to find the words to really explain how I truly feel about 30 Days 2. How about “meh?” There is a reason why this was direct to DVD. It wasn’t a bad movie, but it wasn’t great either. The vampire subplot wasn’t worth the wasted film and the main characters overacted. Overall the biggest complaints I have about 30 Days of Night: Dark Days is that 1) the male lead is Billy from Entourage and that is what I thought throughout the whole movie and 2) the entire movie took place in Los Angeles. Since this movie is based on a series of books I haven’t read, I’m curious to know if this story is straight from the books, or if the writer was flying by the seat of his pants on this one.

Overall this movie in no way met any of my expectations. I loved the original which was directed by David Slade and it made sense to be set in Alaska where 30 days of night time is experienced. The vampires in the original were also more believable, brutal, more animalistic. In this new direct to DVD version the vampires have a sort of control that they shouldn’t have and they look more human than in the original 30 Days of Night. I guess I would recommend 30 Days of Night: Dark Days for a boring Sunday afternoon at home, otherwise skip it and watch the first movie in the series twice.
