Viewing Notes

I had seen the first Death Note at Fantastic Fest back in 2007 and had missed this sequel in favour of other showings. Luckily my friend Brian was able to loan me the DVD so I could get some closure on the series.

The Death Note series follows a book that allows people to write anyone’s name in it to have them die. This ends up in the hands of a young man, the son of a police chief, who uses it under the public alias of Kira to justify removing criminals from society. He ends up hunted by another young man only ever known as L, who works with the police to find the identity of Kira.

At the end of the first one no resolution had been found and a new Death Note had been handed off to a young reporter woman. Death Note: The Last Name picks up immediately where that left off.

I really love the story of Death Note. It’s well thought out, the God of Death characters are freaky and the acting is solid. While it deals with a more supernatural theme, it’s mostly just a great thriller series where the antagonist (a blurry line at best) is outsmarting the police at every turn.

It’s a really fun series, but I do have to say I’m not totally enamored about trying to see anything else they’ve done in this world. I’ve pretty much got my fill and feel that as a whole, both Death Notes deliver a good ride.
