Their plans take a grim turn when their car breaks down on an isolated road starting a chain of events that will seal their fates.

Viewing Notes

Zombies, monsters, serial killers, and natural disasters. These are all things that horror movies explore for us to fear. However, one of the scariest things out there are viruses. Carriers tells the tale of 4 young people who have so far survived a highly infection disease that has wiped out most of the planet. One can survive if you stay away from the infected, splash bleach over everything an infected person has touched and stay isolated as you can.

Brian (Chris Pine) and his brother Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci) are on the way to the Texas beaches because it?s the place they have the best memories of. They want to go surfing and eat soft shell crab sandwiches covered in mayo. Surfing in Texas has to suck. I?ve been to the beaches, so if this is the best thing they can come up with at the end of the world, they really should reevaluate. Accompanying them is Brian?s girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Kate (Emily VanCamp) they picked up along the way. So, other than having shit plans they at least have two very cute girls to keep them company.

So they?re heading to the coast of Texas when they run into a man who has blocked the road with his truck and has his infected daughter in the back (the young Sally Draper from Mad Men). This is where everything goes to hell. Car breaks down, they have to ask for help, they end up in terribly infected areas and then everyone from that moment on seems to make terrible life threatening decisions. It?s a miracle they even survived as long as they did considering how poorly they handle problems once we catch up with their story. Seriously, Brian ends up dangling over an infected pool because he thinks its a good idea to fuck around with a pool skimmer while standing on a diving board. Great idea, chief, that can?t end well!

While these decisions could be an issue for why Carriers isn?t such a great movie, it?s not. I know in horror films that sometimes bad decisions can be made to help move a plot along and hell, not everyone in real life makes the correct decision at all times. What hinders the movie is that the characters are just unlikeable. It seems you?re supposed to care about these four idiots but Pine?s character is a dick to everyone they meet, spouting off like some arrogant Captain Kirk with a chip on his shoulder. Perabo?s character has a glimmer of being someone you?d like, but then makes a decision so stupid you can?t but help to wish for her immediate death. The other two people are completely underdeveloped so it?s hard to give two shits about what happens to them.

So what does Carriers have going for it? I liked seeing what was unfolding in the world as they made their trip, seeing how others were dealing with the outbreak, seeing the broken down towns and masses of body bags. It?s certainly not the detailed world of The Road but I have a love of these end of the world films. The people they show as carriers of the disease are freaky but never really a true terror, as the one thing to fear is being infected, not necessarily the inefected themselves because they don?t ever turn into crazed 28 Days Later flesh eating sprinters.

There?s been a lot better horror films this year, but Carriers is an okay watch, to kill some time and to see Chris Pine honing his Captain Kirk persona. If you really want a great infection movie just stick with Cabin Fever.
