Overview

A man rescues a woman from a suicide attempt in a gay nightclub. Walking the streets together, she propositions him: She’ll pay him to visit her at her isolated house for four consecutive nights. There he will silently watch her. He’s reluctant, but agrees. As the four nights progress, they become more intimate with each other, and a mutual fascination/revulsion develops. By the end of the four-day “contract”, these two total strangers will have had a profound impact on each other.

Viewing Notes

Breillat likes to explore the nature of human sexuality, from a female perspective. Her movies are unflinchingly real, showing real acts and close ups of genitalia. It’s all very arty. Maybe I’m wrong but what I got out of it was that Anatomy of Hell takes a woman who is disgusted by her being, tries to kill herself and is rescued by a gay guy, Rocco Sifredi (the porn star). She then pays him to stay with her on 4 nights where they talk about why hes disgusted by women, the nature of sexuality and other grand topics. She does this all while being nude and then he has sex with her, penetrates her with a rake, they drink water she’s put a tampon in and other crazy shit.

While it’s all very prurient and shocking, I sometime feel like I’m not ever getting the full point of films like this. It’s shocking I suppose, as shocking as a vagina can be, but I don’t know how fulfilling this is supposed to be.

An interesting watch but likely a lot of the story or point is lost on me.
