Viewing Notes

Home Movie is a gimmick horror film told via a family’s home video camera that explores the story of a pair of kids going nuts, as children are prone to do. They’re evil!

Adrian Pasdar of Heroes and Cindy McClain (who is some soap star) play the parents and via their camera we see a happy family with two distant kids who over the course of nearly a year slowly unravel and become increasingly dangerous.

It’d be easy to see this and think those parents are clueless but I thought it was paced well and while it’s not The Children the film was effective in creeping me out because of it’s format. I’m not opposed to the whole first person view in films like Cloverfield or Diary of the Dead and when done well it works. The director, Christopher Denham actually has them put the camera down quite a bit and its just used pointed at a scene and that helps as well.

Performances all around were really well done, the kids are perfectly creepy and all in all I think it’s a pretty decent little film. I like the nice touches of the small animals getting killed and once the descent into darkness happens it seemed easy enough to buy into. I think the ending itself is where it’s kind of weak and hard to believe but I’m willing to forgive that and mostly had a blast with the film. I especially like the last scene on with the dining room and paper bags. I thought about it later and it creeped me out so props to that.
