I used to watch Bugsy Malone anytime it came on cable when I was a kid. Something about seeing a world of gangsters where everyone is a kid like you and having kid-sized cars and then those AWESOME splurge tommy guns was captivating.
Now its still fun, if only for the memories. I ventured out to see it at the Alamo Kid’s Club with some friends and a theater full of parents and their kids and it was a total blast. Plus it’s a bonus seeing it on the big screen. It gets laughs in the right parts and you can really tell just how more talented Jodi Foster is than most of the cast, as she’s so much more comfortable delivering her lines and does it so well. Scott Baio is also pretty charming as Bugsy Malone.
The music numbers are pretty hilarious because it’s all done by adult singers and then dubbed over the top of the kids. While it’s synced up well enough the disparity between the voices is striking and often funny.
I’m still a huge fan of this movie and the last song will get stuck in your head for days. Give a little love and it’ll all come back to you! La la la la la la la!
