Overview

Mary Elizabeth goes to bed alone one night, still a twenty one year old virgin, and wakes up the next morning pregnant. Possessed by the demon fetus growing within her womb, Mary Elizabeth obeys her homicidal cravings to kill, for the sake of her unborn spawn. Mary Elizabeth’s dark transformation is controlled by her unborn demon child’s deadly evil cravings.

Length 107 minutes

Actors

Denise Crosby | Joan Severance | James T. Callahan | Kane Hodder | Alison Brie | Alex D'Lerma | Eddie Velez | Vince Lozano | Azalea Davila | Julie Costello | Shawnie Costello | Rick McCallum

Viewing Notes

Born kicks off where a family is burying their mother and the daughter, Mary Elizabeth (played by Community’s oh so cute Allison Brie) wanders off from the funeral when she hears a baby crying. She ends up at a grave of a baby, starts digging, there’s a storm, shes raised into the air then sucked into the ground. Next day she wakes up preggo and her strict Catholic sister (played by Star Trek’s Denise Crosby) throws a shitfit because her supposedly virginal sister is pregnant. After being examined by her father, a doctor, they find out her hymen is intact. I’m going to gloss over her dad inspecting her vajayjay because that’s creepy on it’s own.

So yeah…as her pregnancy goes along she starts to experience a dual personality as her demon baby (yes, it’s a demon) starts to take her over and she kills people off once a month.

While I won’t make a claim that Born is a good film, I did find it pretty entertaining. It’s hindered by some bad CG effects but all of it is made up by Allison Brie’s performance. She really throws herself into it full bore and I love her switch between the innocent Mary Elizabeth and her possessed baby self that argue back and forth. Also, the kills that she does are pretty good. You do get some nudity but it’s so clearly not Allison Brie and a body double that I found that a little disappointing, but I’m sure that’s helped her down the line, which is good because she’s great on Community and I would of hated that showing some naked flesh would of held her back from being cast on an NBC comedy.

Kane Hodder is also in the film as Asmodeus in a strange plot that runs alongside Mary Elizabeth’s. It all sort of comes together in the end, but was flimsy at best.

All in all Born was a good Sunday afternoon watch for me.
