Viewing Notes

Dreamworks Animation has been totally hit or miss for me. While I’ve usually enjoyed their fare, none of them have ever really resonated with me. The last “great” one I saw was Kung-Fu Panda which I found to be totally fun, but totally lacked the emotion I usually get with the Pixar films. Seriously, something like Up can get some tears to well up in my eyes, but then Monsters Vs. Aliens is never going to do that.

How to Train Your Dragon, however, is the first film they’ve done where I felt an emotional connection with the characters and really got sucked into the movie. I loved they they finally took a movie and instead of dropping a bunch of popular culture references throughout they worked to develop Hiccup as a character, give us a genuine connection between him and Toothless, a relationship between himself and his father and then even the smaller touches of him dealing with being the outcast in the village.

I loved watching the story play out and thought they did a great job developing Toothless as a lovable being and going from portraying all the dragons as evil beasts to being a mixture of cute kitties and dogs. If you don’t come out of this movie wanting your own pet dragon you’re basically a heartless bastard.

HTTYD really just fired on all cylinders for me. The 3D was even good. I’d be hard pressed to see an animated feature again this year that I’ll like as much, I’m sure. Not even Toy Story 3.
