I missed Mother in the theater but have been meaning to see it because I loved The Host, another movie by Joon-ho Bong. The Korean directors have this amazing ability to create deep characters that suck me in and seem very believable and easy to relate to.
Beauifully shot and full of great twists and turns, I found Mother to be an amazing movie. I did find the end to be somewhat predictable, but it didn’t take anything from the movie, much unlike Shutter Island did for me.
Above and beyond the script, amazing cinematography and use of sound (like the Mother’s chopping up of herbs instead of music), the acting is what really elevates the film with Hye-ja Kim putting in probably the best performance I’m likely to see in a movie this year. Do Korean performers ever get any film acclaim from people like the Globes or Independent Spirits? They should!
