I’m a huge history buff and have read boatloads of books on both of the World Wars, so most of the material covered here was known to me. Despite that, Downfall’s material managed to anger and appall me. I guess one never gets used to the senseless slaughter of so many people, including the German civilians, during World War II.
Hats off to Oliver Hirschbiegel for tackling such a sensitive subject with a non-judgmental eye. The movie does a great job of letting the horror of the war, and the insanity of Hitler, bubble to the surface all on its own.
