Overview

Journalist Laura works at home, isolating herself from others. While she lies to her mother and brother, Raul, on the phone about having an active social life, Laura’s days consist of gazing at her neighbors, eating canned food and going to clubs to bring home strangers. As the anniversary of her father’s death draws near, Laura develops a relationship with Arturo, a charismatic actor who shares her taste for rough sex.

Viewing Notes

Leap Year is shot almost entirely inside the main character, Laura’s, dingy apartment in Mexico and revolves around her solitude and sexual life. The men she brings home are of the one-night stand variety and we quickly get a sense that Laura has issues with self-worth that somehow relate to her father and his passing four years prior on February 29, a day that only exists during leap years.

This event has a lot of implied significance to Laura, as one might guess from the title. Laura eventually takes on a partner who has masochistic tendencies, which she encourages to greater and greater levels of violence.

Leap Year is a hard movie to watch at times, but ultimately worth the view. I respected it more for implying the major character motivations instead of being heavy-handed and explaining everything to the last detail.
