I put off watching this for a while because it got such a large negative reaction across the board. After having watched it, I can’t say I understand that. It’s not the best movie, and has it’s flaws, but I really didn’t think it was all that bad.
Flaws first. Both Guy Pierce and Katie Holmes’ acting is very wooden. Their characters lack much depth, Holmes appears as much too chaste and innocent; Pierce too one-dimensional as a bad, self-centered parent.
However, Pierce’s daughter, played by Bailee Madison, does a pretty good job, especially as the movie progresses, and the creatures I thought were well done and kept under wraps long enough to create a little build up.
Is it scary? No, not much (though there are a few effective scenes), and that’s probably the main reason for all the negativity. While I’m glad I didn’t spend money to see it in the theater, I thought it was worthwhile enough to catch on Netflix Instant.
