Thor is a great example of a movie I enjoy quite a bit but can’t seem to shake the pretty obvious flaws in the final product. Too much time wasted on Earth, no chemistry between Jane Foster and Thor despite great charisma separately by both actors, and a finale that I think doesn’t make a lot of sense thematically especially when you consider the forthcoming Avengers movie. Also enough dutch angles to last a lifetime, they become much more apparent on subsequent viewings. There’s still quite a bit to like regardless of the drawbacks. The world of Asgard is fun in kind of a cheesy way and the mythological world based history is detailed and rich with possibilities for future installments. The father-son drama between Odin, Thor, and Loki works pretty well with Branagh’s clear Shakespearean influence. Speaking of Loki, Tom Hiddleston might play the best villain thus far in the Marvel Universe.
While I enjoyed the hell out of Thor, the great parts don’t quite add up to a great whole.
